Track and Field Team Places 5th in PIAA State Championships
The La Salle College High School Track & Field team completed their season by placing 5th as a team at the 2012 PIAA State Track & Field Championship. The 5th place finish marks the best showing in the program's 4 year history at the meet, and makes La Salle the only school in the state to place in the top 10 in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field this year.
The weekend was highlighted by Junior Tom Coyle capturing La Salle's first ever PIAA title. Coyle won the 1600m run in a school record time of 4:11.97. Coyle bided his time, sitting in 3rd place until 150m to go and then unleashing his monstrous kick, in which he covered the final 400m in 58.0, which catapulted him to the historic win.
Following Coyle's thrilling win, fellow junior Andrew Stone ran an outstanding 800m to take 3rd place. Stone ran the second fastest 800m in school history, 1:53.53 to capture his first-ever individual 800m medal.
In field action, junior Corey Muggler broke his own triple jump school record on Friday. Muggler saved his best for last and achieved a personal best on his sixth and final jump of the day with a 46'9.75" to finish 7th and earn a PIAA medal.
Also, junior Luke Persichetti achieved a personal best in the shot put on Saturday morning. He too saved his best for last and moved from 9th to 7th on his sixth and final throw with a personal best of 54'3.25" to earn a PIAA medal.
Additionally the Explorers saw Levi Hardy and Jack Magee make their first appearances in the Outdoor State Meet in the 110m High Hurdles and 1600m respectively, and senior captain Mike DeCandido capped his outstanding career by jumping 6'0" in the high jump.
