Varsity Team Places 2nd in Cross Country PCL Championships
The cross country team competed in the Philadelphia Catholic League Championship on Saturday, October 19th at Belmont Plateau. The day began with the Freshman ream winning the Freshman PCL Championship! The team scored just 22 points. La Salle received amazing races from team scorers David Kennedy, Tommy Farrell, Greg Galbreath, Jack Galbreath, and Quinn O’Neill. David captured the individual championship in a fast 18:04, Tommy placed 3rd, and Greg, Jack, and Quinn finished 5th, 6th, and 7th – all finishing under 19:00! Those 5 averaged a very fast 18:37. The Freshman Explorers also placed 6 other runners in the top 25 (medalists): Kieran Morgan in 11th, Johnny Loftus in 12th, Spencer Norris in 16th, Matt Pires in 20th, Tom Cawley in 22nd, and Frank Depman in 25th.
Next the Junior Varsity team captured the PCL JV Championship! The JV team scored just 23 points and averaged a quick 18:01 for their first 5 finishers. The team was led by the junior duo of Ryan Mitchell and Sean Princivalle in 2nd and 3rd place turning in times of 17:38 and 17:47. Rounding out the scoring for the JV was Joe Cuce in 5th place, Stefan Sutton in 6th, and Tim Markiewicz in 7th. Also finishing in the medals (top 25) for the Explorers were Ian Challingsworth in 8th, Frank Livolsi in 9th, Nick Camusi in 11th (all of those runners ran 18:30 or faster to earn La Salle Varsity Letters), senior co-captain Matt McCarry in 15th, and Jimmy Worthington in 24th.
The Varsity race capped the day, and the Explorers ran gamely to claim 2nd place, behind US #21 Cardinal O’Hara, for the fourth consecutive year. The varsity team was led by senior co-captain Brendan Bilotta who finished 7th overall in 16:56. He was followed by a very tight pack that raced tough for the Explorers. The pack was led by the amazing race of freshman Stephen Paul, who ran a PR of 17:21 to capture 15th place and earn 1st Team All-Catholic. Stephen led a pack of 5 La Salle runner across the line in just a scant 11 seconds. He was followed quickly by Corey Driscoll in 17th (17:23), Michael Phayre in 18th (17:24), Eddie Goebel in 19th (17:29), and Patrick Grant in 20th (17:32) – all earning 2nd Team All-Catholic. The Varsity was rounded out by freshman Brendan Price who finished in 26th (17:58), earning Honorable Mention All-Catholic.
The team will compete in the PIAA District XII Championship on Thursday, October 24th and the qualifiers will move on to the PIAA State Championship in Hershey, PA on Saturday, November 2nd.
