A Message from Brother James Butler, FSC

Dear La Salle College High School Family,

With a very heavy heart but with gratitude to God that he was a part of our lives for nearly four decades, I write to let you know that Mr. Tom Turner passed away overnight, surrounded by the loving family that has cared for him so lovingly throughout his final illness. Mr. Turner joined the La Salle community as a teacher in the Social Studies department in the 1982-83 school year, having arrived on campus as fledgling soccer coach in an earlier season. In addition to coaching and teaching World Cultures/World History, Mr. Turner served for a number of years as our assistant Dean of Students.

Whatever job Mr. Turner held, he used it as a vehicle to show his loving concern for those entrusted to his care, students and colleagues alike. For years he discreetly supervised several La Salle funds which assist students or staff members and their families make it through a period of financial challenge or health difficulties. He had an eagle eye for any students who were experiencing difficulty adjusting to La Salle as ninth graders. He showed them support and communicated gently how to be successful. In the discipline office, Mr. Turner knew intuitively which students needed compassion and understanding to get them through a rough spot and how to call a slacker to account in short order. In the classroom, while the course was history, the subject was how to develop into a respectful, responsible, and caring adult man. Such men asked after Tom and called in to see him, year after year. They came out in force when Coach Turner was inducted into the Hall of Athletics this past September.

During a break between exams this morning, many students and teachers gathered in the chapel to honor Mr. Turner's memory and the gift he was to us all. We will communicate again with the La Salle family when the arrangements for the viewing and funeral Mass celebrating Mr. Turner's life are finalized by his wife Michele, his daughters, and family, who are in all our prayers at this difficult time.

For the moment let us honor Tom's entrance into eternal life by recalling a Mr. Turner comment I have heard quoted by La Salle parents several times over the years. They related it as being made during open houses for prospective students and families or at back to school night, where Mr. Turner would reassure parents worried about the rigor of a La Salle education and how their sons might fare in this challenging environment, "Don't worry; we will get him through." While we are very sad to lose Tom among us, we celebrate that we now have another mentor and colleague at the side of Jesus, our first and best teacher. When my own time comes to give an account of my misdeeds and shortcomings, I like to picture Tom back at it again, elbowing the ledger aside and advocating in those same words, "Don't worry; we will get him through."

St. John Baptist de La Salle. Pray for us.

Live Jesus in our Hearts. Forever!

Memories of Tom

To celebrate the life that Tom shared with so many during his time at La Salle, we have compiled some images and videos from his nearly four decades as a part of our community.
