Cross Country Team Wins Briarwood Invitational

The Briarwood Invitational is one of the biggest invitationals on the East Coast.

The La Salle College High School Cross Country team competed in their first invitational of the season Saturday at Belmont Plateau. The Explorers ran in one of the biggest Invitationals on the East Coast at the Briarwood Invitational.

The day began with the Varsity team facing defending State Champions and PA #1 Council Rock North and NJ#4 Delsea Regional. Led by a solid 4th place finish from Evan Addison (16:30), they team placed 3 in the top 10 when sophomores Vince Twomey (16:53) and Ethan Maher (17:01) came home with great races in 7th and 9th places. The scoring was rounded out by Sean Egan (17:41) and sophomore Brady Koors (17:43) who came home in 26th and 29th. With their 75 points, the Explorers managed to take the win over CR North who was missing two runners on the day.

The team then swept the JV A and JV B titles. The A team scored 22 points, loading a big pack up front. Junior Paul Ghantous took the win in 17:51, and he was followed by Thomas Price (18:16) in 2nd, and junior Matt Zilligen (18:20) in 3rd. The JV A scoring was completed by sophomore Griffin Pumilia in 8th and Jimmy Lombardi in 10th.

The JV B team posted a perfect score of 15 points, and actually took the first 9 places over all, and 10 of the top 12. Shawn McKenna, Chris Mulligan, James Marek, Sean Krumenacker, and Matt Hladczuk placed 1-2-3-4-5 to lead the Explorers.

In the final race of the day, the Freshman 3k, the Explorers placed 3rd just a mere 5 points behind Conestoga and 2 points behind Great Valley. The scorers for the freshman were Owen Norris in 14th, Michael Lombardi in 15th, Patrick Coyle in 20th, AJ Frank in 24th, and Max Manganiello in 30th.

The team will return to Belmont each of the next four Wednesdays for regular season PCL Meets. The team's next Invitational will be the Carlisle Invitational on Saturday, September 30th.
