La Salle College High School supported Building a Bridge to Uganda - a mission and sea container project for a high school in Uganda, Africa that is spearheaded by a local alum, Lou Buonomo '74 . After several months of travel across the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, the sea container finally arrived at Pope John Paul II High School where Lou and a group of fellow volunteers unpacked and resorted the contents. The volunteers also helped facilitate the distribution of goods to Pope John Paul II High School, Marengoni Primary School, and to families in the surrounding village.

Through the efforts of Mr. Joe Glacken, a Learning Specialist in the David Center, La Salle was able to contribute a number of items including old soccer uniforms (courtesy of Mr. Tom McCaffery) and musical instruments (courtesy of Mr. Joe Ciccimaro), which the students quickly put to use. Some of the other contributions of the project included:

  • Development of a library at the Pope John Paul II High School and Marengoni Primary School
  • Initiation of a music program at Pope John Paul II High School
  • Distribution of over 150 pairs of children's shoes
  • Installation and dedication of Mater Dolorosa Bell
