Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott '93 was named head coach of the Buffalo Bills on Wednesday.

McDermott's defensive units have finished in the top 10 in takeaways each season since 2013. He twice finished in the top 10 in points allowed (second in 2013 and sixth in 2015) in his tenure with Carolina, and he helped to lead them to the Super Bowl last season.

McDermott was inducted into La Salle's Hall of Athletics in 2015. He played five positions at La Salle, was a two-time All-Catholic Defensive Back, and was selected for the Montgomery County All-Star Team. He was voted to the Daily News All-Decade Team as a Defensive Back. McDermott was captain of the football and wrestling teams and lettered in track. He received the Student-Athlete Award for the Class of 1993.

Beyond the football field, McDermott is widely regarded as La Salle's most accomplished wrestler. He was both a two-time All-Catholic and National Prep School Champion. He went undefeated in 75 consecutive matches – a streak that stretched across two seasons. He was named the Philadelphia Daily News and Philadelphia Inquirer Wrestler of the Year and selected to the USA High School Wrestling Tournament.
