Summer 7s In the Sun

The Explorers wrapped up their summer 7s season recently with a strong finish at the 13th Annual Surfside Sevens tournament in Stone Harbor, NJ. La Salle entered two teams in the tournament, which is now host to the American High School Championship. The U15 team took 4th in the Cup bracket behind two select sides from Maryland and PA State Champions, Doylestown. The U19 Explorers took 1st in the Bowl bracket, and finished the tournament 5th overall. Surfside 7s followed the Explorers participation in the HSRCs, the high school tournament run in conjunction with the College Rugby Championship which pulls in the top 20 rugby colleges in the nation as well as some very talented local rugby teams for a weekend long competition at PPL Park. Notable La Salle alumns Jason DeNofa '12 played for runner-up Kutztown who lost to Cal in the tournament final. Mike Eife '13 scored multiple tries throughout the tournament and received several man-of-the-match distinctions.

Much of the competition takes place on two brand new grass fields outside the stadium. However, the Explorers were able to play inside PPL Park this year for an exciting experience but unfortunately falling in the match to a very talented DC Pride team. Highlights of the tournament include a heads-up play and try scored by Aiden Kelly to defeat Roman Catholic in the final seconds as well as a defeat of St. Joe's Prep in the final match
