Explorers Win 1st PIAA Baseball State Championship in School History

The La Salle College College High School Varsity Baseball Team defeated Council Rock South 3-1 on Friday, June 15, 2012 to win the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) AAAA Baseball State Championship for the first time in school history.  La Salle became the first Philadelphia Catholic League (PCL) and first PIAA District 12 Team to win a PIAA Championship in Baseball.

Senior Kevin Long pitched a complete game three-hitter in his final start as an Explorer as La Salle finishes the season with an overall 24-3 record. The baseball state championship is the third state title for La Salle Athletics this school year with both the Swimming and Ice Hockey Teams winning state championships in the Winter Sports season.

In addition to winning the state crown, Head Coach Mr. Joe Parisi was named Southeastern Pennsylvania Baseball Coach of the Year. In his 26 seasons at the helm, Parisi has compiled a 411-227 record (.644 winning percentage). Win No. 400 came earlier this year against archrival St. Joseph's Prep on May 3. He won Catholic League crowns in 2005, 1994, and 1988.

Long and battery-mate Senior Corey Baiada were also named to the All-Southeasten Pennsylvania Baseball First Team by The Philadelphia Inquirer Long went 11-2 with a 2.00 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 77 innings. The Lehigh recruit also batted .314 with nine RBIs, nine runs, and four doubles.

Batting cleanup for the PIAA Class AAAA state champions, Baiada hit .480 with 31 RBIs, 25 runs, 10 doubles, and a homer. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound senior catcher was selected as the Catholic League Red Division's most valuable player. He will continue his baseball career at Bloomsburg.

Overall, seven Explorers were also named to the All-Catholic Team this season.
