Enrichment for Pre-7th and Pre-8th Grade Students

All boys and girls entering the seventh and eighth grade during the 2019-2020 academic year are invited to join the Brother Carl Clayton Academy, La Salle’s Summer Enrichment Program.

So named for longtime and current Lasallian teacher, friend, mentor, and role model, the Brother Carl Clayton Academy enriches its students through a tradition of excellence and community. The Academy runs Monday through Friday from June 17 – July 29, 8:20 AM – 1 PM. There are no classes the week of July 1–5. You may select from the following sessions:

The Pre-7th and Pre-8th Enrichment program features the following opportunities:

Math and English classes focusing on enrichment and preparation for the High School Placement Test (HSPT)
Weekly themed classes in Rockets, Speech and Debate, Coding, and Business Smarts. Each of these classes corresponds with one of the four weeks of the Brother Carl Clayton Program. The dates of each weekly themed class will be announced soon.
Hands on learning in Art, Science, and Computer classes
A daily "Explore" period in which students engage in team-based mental and physical challenges designed to build community, camaraderie, and self-confidence

Math Course Options

Pre-7th Math Courses

Math Course 7.1 – This course is designed for students that have taken a pre-algebra course. This course is appropriate for honors level students.

Course Topics: integers, order of operations, evaluating expressions, solving equations, coordinate plane and graphing, exponents, polynomials

Prerequisites: completion of a pre-algebra course.

Math Course 7.2 – This course is for students with limited to no experience with pre-algebra.

Course topics: fractions, decimals, ratios and proportions, percent’s, integers, order of operations, variables

Prerequisites: knowledge of basic fractions and decimals.

Pre-8th Math Courses

Math Course 8.1 – This course is designed for students that have completed a pre-algebra course and have taken a basic algebra 1 course. This course is appropriate for honors level students.

Course topics: solving equations, exponents, coordinate plane and graphing, systems of equations, polynomials, solving polynomials

Prerequisites: completion of pre-algebra course, understanding of basic variables and solving problems.

Math Course 8.2 – This course is designed for the student who has taken some pre-algebra but has not completed an entire course covering all topics.

Course topics: Fractions, decimals, integers, order of operations, evaluating expressions, variables, solving linear equations.

Prerequisites: basic understanding of pre-algebra topics without completing a full year course in pre-algebra

The Legacy of Brother Carl Clayton

As of 2017, La Salle’s Pre-7^th and Pre-8^th Summer Enrichment Program has been renamed in honor of Brother Carl Clayton, FSC. Known for a career stretching across decades and continents, Brother Carl is beloved by students of many different generations and cultures. His roles in various Lasallian institutions include teacher, campus minister, guidance counselor, vice principal, principal, mentor, and friend. He has served La Salle College High School on three different occasions during his career and in 2014 received the President’s Medal. Colleagues and students alike treasure his wit, warmth, and wisdom. He currently resides in Amondale (sp?), Maryland, but his presence continues at La Salle as the namesake of the summer enrichment program and in the hearts of his friends and colleagues.

Transportation

English

This course will prepare students for 9th grade by offering an overview of reading, composition, and vocabulary skills. Students will begin learning the tools to grasp critical thinking skills and text analysis through discussion and appropriate writing techniques.

Math Applications

Students will work on pre-algebra and algebra concepts such as fractions, integers, solving linear equations, graphing linear equations, and inequalities. It will also explore a hands on application of the scientific method and is structured to prepare students for the demands of their first year in science and math.

English

This course will help prepare students for the high school literary environment by providing an array of reading, composition, and vocabulary skills. Students will practice critical thinking skills and text analysis through discussion and appropriate writing techniques.

PSAT/SAT test prep

La Salle offers SAT/PSAT Test Prep Courses to students, males and females, from any area school.

The cost of each SAT/PSAT Course is $375. Students can save by registering for both courses at a reduced rate of $700. Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:30 am - 1:00 pm, from June 18 - July 18.

SAT/PSAT Course Descriptions

Math Course

This 18-hour course reviews the basic principles of Arithmetic, Algebra, Probability, Statistics, Data Analysis, Geometry and Trigonometry. Strategies are introduced for handling the new SAT problems involving these principles. Students will use ten SAT tests to learn principles and strategies so that they will become comfortable with the formatting and type of questions on the actual test.

English Course

This 22-hour course begins with a series of diagnostic tests focusing on sentence completions, analogies, reading comprehension, and written English. The SAT requirements are stressed along with a general review of test taking strategies. There are practice tests given during the five weeks of the course to prepare for the full test in October.

High School Geometry summer course

The Math Department of La Salle College High School is offering a course in Geometry over the summer.

The offering allows motivated students who enter La Salle taking Algebra 1 or 1 Honors to advance through the curriculum with the goal of taking a Calculus course before graduation.

The course will cover a full year of Geometry over a six week period, meeting five days a week for five hours a day. Due to this intense and rigorous schedule, there will be strong prerequisites for this offering. Students will not only need to meet the prerequisites, but must also need to be incredibly motivated and extremely committed. Missing one class will be problematic and missing two classes may necessitate withdrawing from the class. Upon completion of the course, students will earn a final grade that will appear on their La Salle transcript and be calculated in their G.P.A. for the subsequent fall semester.

Class will start at 9AM each day and end by 1:30PM. There will a half hour break each day from 11AM – 11:30AM. There will be no class on Friday July 3rd.

Each week, the class will cover 1-2 chapters and have a chapter test on Friday each week. A mid-term exam will be given on the Friday of the 3rdweek and a final exam will be given on the Friday of the final week.

Pre-requisites

For students just completing Algebra 2:

A or above in Algebra 2 and department approval
B+ or higher in Algebra 2 Honors and department approval

For students just completing Algebra 1:

A or above in Algebra 1 and department approval

Microsoft IT academy

Program Vision

La Salle College High School has been a Microsoft IT Academy at the highest level (Level One) for over twelve years. This program has benefitted countless numbers of La Salle students who have continued to become Microsoft Certified to the highest levels. They have moved on to become extremely successful and experts in their respective fields after completing undergraduate studies. The vision of the Summer Program is to extend that success outside of the La Salle College High School Community.

TV/Video bootcamp

The Student Television Summer Bootcamp at La Salle College High School is open to boys and girls from 6th through 12th grade.

The sessions will benefit students with an interest in video production, improving their interview skills, on-air talent, working behind the scenes in a TV Studio, mobile journalism, newswriting, social media, sports journalism, digital storytelling and video editing.

What can students expect to do

Students will learn how to produce digital content using the latest HD Digital Technology on the market in La Salle WEXP TV Studio and Multimedia Editing Labs. Students will have hands-on experience using HD Cameras, DSLR Cameras, Microphones, Green Screens, and produce a TV Segment using industry-standard hardware such as the NewTek Tricaster.

Each student will leave the camp with a digital portfolio of work which may include an on-camera news segment, a video feature, interview or various other options as part of the workshop.

Sessions will focus on Newswriting, TV Studio Broadcast Technology, Digital Storytelling, On-Air Talent, Photojournalism, The Production Process, Video Editing Using Adobe Premiere Pro and Mobile Journalism.

No experience or personal equipment is necessary to excel in the Student Television Bootcamp!

Who Teaches the Camp

La Salle's Director of Multimedia Technology and Moderator of WEXP Mr. Robert Johnson is the lead instructor for the Bootcamp. Mr. Johnson has been running La Salle's Multimedia Department since 2007, and oversees La Salle's In-House TV station, Multimedia Curriculum as well as all Multlimedia and Social Media for the school. In 2014, over 50 of Mr. Johnson's Multimedia Students received their Adobe Certified Associate Certification in Adobe Premiere Pro as part of La Salle's Multimedia Production Courses.

Outside of La Salle, Mr. Johnson has been a Show Producer for Comcast SportsNet in Philadelphia since 2002 and has produced content and interviewed athletes from all of the Philadelphia area Professional Sports Teams and Division I Programs. Mr. Johnson has been nominated for a Mid-Atlantic Emmy Award two-time for his freelance producing work at CSN. In 2013, Mr. Johnson also taught Field Production as an adjnuct professor in La Salle University's Communication Department.

Mr. Johnson has a Bachelors Degree in Communications from La Salle University, a Masters Degree in Instructional Technology from Saint Joseph's University and multiple certifications in Social Media from La Salle University as well.

Robotics camp

Intro to Robotics
June 18-22

Cost - $250

Advanced Robotics is for students who have completed the first week of Robotics or who have a background in basic Robotics.

Enrollment is limited.

Spend the week learning the fundamentals of robotics, as you design your robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 kits. Using the software provided, you will learn how to program your robot to complete the challenges set forth in the program. The kits will provide you with all the software, motors & gears, and sensors that you need to complete the challenges, but it is up to you and your small group to work together to accomplish the tasks. If you enjoy building with LEGO kits and/or computer programming and have the imagination and drive to take on challenges, then this camp is for you!

Jazz camp

Now in its 18th year, the La Salle Jazz Camp offers girls and boys with interest
and potential in music the opportunity to hone their talents with the enjoyable
atmosphere of one of the finest music programs in the Delaware Valley.

From individual instruction, to composing in the digital music lab, to ensemble playing, participants in Jazz Camp will experience the fun and satisfaction of making music and improving their instrumental skills.

The program includes general instruction in the understanding of jazz, individual lessons under the instruction of the talented La Salle College High School music faculty, and ensemble playing each day.

All students will work in the digital music lab and may choose additional instruction in composing, arranging, and listening skills. The recreation and lunch facilities of the La Salle Dining Hall are available to participants in the program.

Infield Bootcamps (July 30-August 1; August 13-15)

The La Salle Infield Bootcamp is designed to provide intense individualized defensive instruction in a small group setting. What makes this camp unique is the player/coach ratio and limited enrollment. Each camp promises a 4-to-1 player/coach ratio with a max camp enrollment of just 20 players. Broken into 3-hour blocks spread over 3 consecutive days, players are immersed in infield instruction. The goal is to not only drill the fundamentals of infield play, but also to have the flexibility to go into the more advanced techniques of the positions as the individual player’s skillset allows. With smaller numbers, the specialized needs of each player can be met with individualized pacing and depth of instruction.

The La Salle Hitting Bootcamp is designed to provide intense individualized hitting instruction in a small group setting. What makes this camp unique is the player/coach ratio and limited enrollment. This camp promises at least a 4-to-1 player/coach ratio with a max camp enrollment of just 20 players. Broken into 3-hour blocks spread over three consecutive days, the camp immerses players in hitting instruction and repetitions as campers work with LaSalle coaches and current players to develop their swing.

Want to take your game a step further? Play Fast Camp is NXT's fundamental-level camp for boys ages 6-14 who want to fine-tune their skills and elevate their game.
Our high-level professional coaches work directly with young players of all ability levels through the carefully-designed Play Fast curriculum, which features fast-paced, high-energy drills without having to wait in line forever.
Play Fast is designed to maximize quality reps, which is why there's an 8-to-1 player-to-coach ratio. Play Fast is a four-day camp.

Rowing summer camps

The La Salle College High School Summer Rowing Camp is for boys and girls entering 7th, 8th, and 9th Grades

The objective of this camp is to provide an introduction to rowing and to give each rower a firm foundation.

Students will row out of the La Salle Boathouse on historic Boathouse Row in Philadelphia.

Mondays to Fridays

Session 1: June 18 to June 29

Session 2: July 9 to July 20

Students are asked to be at the front of the school by 1:00 pm, so that the bus can depart La Salle by 1:15 pm.

The bus will return to La Salle by 4:15 PM.

Costs:

Safety Information
Inclement Weather

Safety Information

All safety procedures are handled on day one. No floatation devices are worn but all equipment is designed to float.

A coach will go out with each boat. At most it is two boats per coach, which is in conjunction with the rules of the PSRA.

We ask that all parents confirm with the coach that the child can swim in the case of an emergency.

Shells are very stable and rarely, if ever, flip. But in the case of an emergency...all safety procedures will be gone over on day one.

Student should wear clothes in which they can workout and run. Sunscreen and sunglasses are also recommended.

Inclement Weather

In cases of inclement weather or if the float rate of the river is too fast for novice rowers, practice will be held at La Salle on the Erg machines.

Since no travel time to and from the river is needed, practice will end at 2:15 pm if you would like to pick up your son or daughter early. However, rowers will be supervised until the normal ending time of 4:15 pm.
