The La Salle College High School Crew Program's Varsity and Lightweight 8's participated in the US Rowing Youth Nationals Regatta from June 8-10, 2012 on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
The LW 8 was first to row on Friday June 8 and placed second in the initial heat. The V8 followed and placed fourth in their preliminary heat. The competition increased on Saturday June 9 and the LW 8+, trying to find their rhythm, placed third in the reparchage less than three seconds behind the second place Belen Jesuit and thus did not make it to the semifinal race.
The V8, with a heroic effort, passed Lincoln Park Juniors, from Chicago, in the final ten strokes of the race and placed second in the reparcharge thus making the semifinal race to be held later in the day. In the semifinal, the V8 came in fourth place beating their cross state rival Central Catholic High School, Pittsburgh.
On Sunday June 10, the LW 8 placed second in a hard fought C Final and the V8 placed second in the B final, this time beating not only Central Catholic but also Long Island crew powerhouse Chaminade High School.
The finish by both boats beat La Salle's 2011 Youth National results and marked significant progress for the La Salle Crew program. Not counting the club teams, the LW 8 was the #3 high school team in the country while the V8 was the #1 high school team.
The USRowing Youth National Championships features more than 1,500 athletes from high school and junior rowing programs across the country competing for national titles in 18 boat classes.
