The inaugural induction of the Hall of Athletics at La Salle College High School took place on Friday evening, September 14, 2012 during a ceremony held in the auditorium and attended by over three hundred people.
During a five month period, over 5,000 people visited the Hall of Athletics website to submit public nominations for candidates representing three different categories – athletes, coaches, and teams. A committee then determined the inaugural inductees.
The Inaugural Class of Athletes inducted included Tom Gola ’51, who is widely recognized as one of the greatest players in the history of Philadelphia high school basketball, along with Jack Stanczak ’89, who is regarded as one of the best all-round athletes in the history of La Salle College High School.
The two coaches inducted were Charles “Obie” O’Brien, who coached basketball at La Salle for thirty four seasons, and John “Tex” Flannery, who coached football for thirty-three years. The 1945-46 Basketball Team, who won the first City Championship in school history, was also inducted, as was the 1957 Football Team who likewise won the City Championship.
