The La Salle College High School Cross Country team competed in the PCL Championship on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at Belmont Plateau. Starting the day off on the right foot for the team was the Freshman squad. Led by tremendous pack running the Freshman captured the PCL Championship! Patrick Grant and Joe Cuce placed 2nd and 3rd overall to lead the team.
They were followed by a trio of PRs from Keegan MacMaster, Eddie, Goebel, and Nick Camusi who placed 7th, 8th, and 9th, respectively – putting all 5 scorers in the top 10! Frank Livolsi and Jake Donahue both placed in the top 30 with PRs as well.
The Junior Varsity team placed second led by an impressive performance from the sophomore class. Sean Princivalle, Mike Phayre, and Ryan Mitchell all ran PRs to place 3rd, 5th, and 7th respectively, with both Princivalle and Phayre breaking the 18:00 barrier for the first time in their careers. Fellow sophomores Corey Driscoll and Matt Bowen both placed in the top 25 and broke the 19:00 barrier to round out the team scoring for the JV.
The Varsity team then also placed second as a team behind Cardinal O’Hara (currently ranked 8th in the United States and #1 in Pennsylvania). O’Hara set PCL Championship records by scoring just a scant 17 points, and averaging a remarkable 16:13 for their 5 scorers over the challenging 5k course at Belmont.
The Explorers were a clear second scoring 48 points. Senior captain Tom Coyle was the lone runner to break up the top 6 runners from O’Hara placing 4th overall. He was then followed by season bests from Andrew Stone and Matt Greco in 8th and 9th, respectively. The scoring for La Salle was then rounded out by Jack Magee and Evan Quain in 11th and 16th. Magee broke 17:00, putting 4 Explorers under the vaunted Belmont standard, and Quain ran another personal best. The top 5 managed to average 16:48, a season best.
The Varsity will compete for a trip to Hershey for the State Championship this Thursday in the PIAA District XII Championship, at Belmont Plateau.
