Travis Manion Foundation Presents to the La Salle Student Body in the Fran Johnson Lecture Series
The Travis Manion Foundation presented on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 to the student body of La Salle College High School as part of the Fran Johnson Lecture Series sponsored by the La Salle Mothers' Club. On hand was Ryan Manion Borek, sister of 1st Lt. Travis Manion, USMC ‘99, and Navy SEAL, Rhoads Scholar, and Humanitarian Eric Greitins. Together they delivered a moving lecture about service, leadership and courage called “Character Does Matter”.
Eric spoke about the importance of committing one's self to serving other people and how service activities can help student's realize their potential by learning to work with others, to organize, to communicate, and becoming a leader who can leave a lasting impression on the world. He used real life examples from his travels abroad working in refugee families in war torn countries. Ryan Manion Borek, spoke about great acts of courage the young men can apply in everyday life and the thought of applying the “If not me, then who” motto to their lives. Ryan reminded the kids that they need not to look far beyond the halls of La Salle to perform great acts of courage. To close the presentation, all students were challenged to look into their everyday lives and think about where they could create positive change to help those around them; the true essence of leadership.
In 2007, Mr. Greitens used his combat pay to start a non-profit organization called The Mission Continues. The Mission Continues empowers wounded and disabled veterans to continue serving their country here at home through service fellowships. Fellowships are accompanied by monetary grants. Through The Mission Continues, Eric has helped to honor fallen service members like Travis Manion. The Travis Manion Foundation has partnered with The Mission Continues, to keep Travis' spirit alive, by funding some of the Fellowships. Several Mission Continues Fellows have already been named in memory of Travis and his service to the United States.
Eric and Ryan will be back in the Spring to follow-up on the challenge presented and to continue to deliver the message that “Character Does Matter”.
