Art
The Visual Arts program of La Salle College High School is designed for all students who have an interest in investigating and experiencing different techniques based on the principles of art and design. The Arts are an integral part of each student’s education. Students are presented with a series of challenges requiring observation, reflection, and experimentation. From these challenges, students develop their own responses to problems and learn to express themselves visually through the art studio process.
- 855 Foundations Art – Freshman (elective) – 1 credit/full year
This course is offered to students interested in a wide range of art experiences. It emphasizes the fundamentals of two-dimensional and three-dimensional skills involving a variety of materials and techniques. The focus is on design as students gain experience in drawing, painting, sculpting, ceramics, papermaking and printmaking.
- 860 Drawing 1 – Sophomore/Junior/Senior (elective) – .5 credit/semester
This course is structured to give students a working knowledge of drawing. Traditional and experimental techniques are emphasized. Demonstrations, class discussions, and videos accompany instruction. Students experience a variety of media which includes graphite, charcoal, pastel, conté crayon, and India ink.
- 865 Drawing 2 – Sophomore/Junior/Senior (elective) – .5 credit/semester
Drawing 2 focuses on establishing styles and developing creative approaches to drawing. Portraiture and life drawing are included with mixed media and experimental processes. More emphasis will be placed on layering drawings, distortion, reflection, gesture, and the use of color in drawing. Specific artists will be highlighted to clarify concepts.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Drawing 1.
- 870 Painting 1 – Sophomore/Junior/Senior (elective) – 1 credit/full year
This course is structured to give students a working knowledge of painting techniques, and applying principles of color theory and design. Using a variety of media, students explore landscapes, still life, portraiture, graphic and abstract design. Using outside examples and participating in group discussions, students integrate language and analysis along with the painting process.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Drawing 1.
- 877 Painting 2 – Junior/Senior (elective) – 1 credit/full year
Painting 2 focuses on broadening the range of painting experiences to include expression, dimension, relief, and abstraction. Students will be challenged to intensify their investigation of color, form, and surface through the studio process and through research on artists and art forms. The course materials include watercolor, acrylic, mixed media, paper, panel and canvas painting.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Drawing 1 and Painting 1.
- 880 Ceramics 1 – Sophomore/Junior/Senior (elective) – .5 credit/semester
This course introduces students to three-dimensional form, basic hand-building techniques, and information on clays, firing, and glazing. Knowledge of the history, culture, and aesthetics of ceramics is further developed through class discussion and experience.
- 885 Ceramics 2 – Junior/Senior (elective) – .5 credit/semester
Ceramics 2 is an advanced course of study, concentrating on acquiring the skill to throw clay on the potter’s wheel. Students will practice opening, centering, and pulling cylindrical forms which will be combined with hand building techniques to create larger scale pieces. Aesthetics is further developed through class discussions and experience.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Ceramics 1.
- 886 Advanced Ceramics (Independent Study) – Senior (elective) – 1 credit/full year
Since this is an independent course of study, the student must be prepared to explore the use of clay in a personally unique way. Experience and vision will help create work with spirit and feeling.
Prerequisite: By arrangement with teacher.
- 890 Sculpture 1 – Sophomore/Junior/Senior (elective) – .5 credit/semester
This studio course introduces students to the fundamentals of sculpture. Instruction extends to both traditional and contemporary form-making in a variety of materials and techniques based on the elements of art and design. A variety of media are explored. Students are assessed by their work and through class discussion.
- 891 Sculpture 2 – Junior/Senior (elective) – .5 credit/semester
Sculpture 2 investigates a further development of the recognition and construction of space and form. Students are encouraged to explore movement, balance, scale, and weight with organic and geometric qualities. Individual responses are assessed by the exploration of different media (wood, plaster, clay, and metal) and through class discussion.
- 892 Advanced Sculpture (Independent Study) – Senior (elective) – 1 credit/full year
Advanced sculpture is an independent study course, where the student must be prepared to investigate, explore, and construct forms in a creative way to enhance a personal and challenging response. The course is for students assembling a college art portfolio.
Prerequisite: By arrangement with teacher.
- 895 Art Portfolio (Independent Study) – Senior (elective) – 1 credit/full year
Art Portfolio specifically addresses those students who are seeking a career in art and wish to apply to a college level art program. This course includes targeting those areas that need strengthening in each student’s artistic development and working towards creating a strong and cohesive body of work. Students who are enrolled in Art Portfolio are strongly urged to attend the annual National Portfolio day in the fall and to take an additional art studio class in a pre-college program.
