La Salle College High School Swimming Head Coach Steve Duncheskie '94 has been named the 2020-21 Swimming Coach of the Year, announced by the PIAA October 12, 2021. This is the first time a La Salle Swimming Head Coach has won the PIAA Coach of the Year award.
Coach Duncheskie has led the swimming program for seven seasons, and has been a member of the program for twenty-three years. Steve took over the program after the passing of former La Salle Hall of Athletics Coach Mr. Frank Lichtner.
President Brother James Butler, FSC shared his praise of Mr. Duncheskie's efforts in the pool:
“Steve took over the program he himself swam for under sad and trying circumstances but has managed to build significantly upon the legacy the late Frank Lichtner entrusted to him. Students arrive at La Salle from all over the Delaware Valley to swim for Steve, and he molds this diverse group into a cohesive and successful team, one which makes each individual athlete better than he would have been without his fellow Explorers. A member of the La Salle family for over three decades now, Steve’s deep knowledge of the sport and high EQ make him a terrific motivator and guide for our young men.”
In addition to being the swimming head coach, Mr. Duncheskie has been a member of the science department since 1999 and a former Science Department Chair.
The Explorers have won 33 straight Philadelphia Catholic League Championships (1989-2021) and are the two-time defending PIAA State Championships (2020, 2021). Duncheskie was inducted in 2018 the La Salle Hall of Athletics for his performance as a student-athlete.
