Elizabeth Harlow, a Duke admission officer, wrote this insightful article:
Inside Holistic Admissions: How Does My Decision Happen?

The college counselors follow the faculty schedule and are not in the office during the summer. We encourage your sons to contact their college counselor to schedule a meeting with any questions or concerns before the end of the school year Friday, 5/21. The counselors will be checking email periodically throughout the summer. You can stay informed throughout the summer by following one of our social media platforms and visiting If there is an issue that needs immediate attention during the summer, please call the College Counseling Assistant, Mrs. Katie Palopoli at (215) 402-4849 or email Please keep in mind that there will be times during the summer (most of July) when Mrs. Palopoli will not be available. Unofficial transcripts will be available for rising seniors to download through the student portal beginning in mid-June.

It has been a pleasure to work with your sons throughout this process. We have been humbled by the resiliency they have shown throughout the past year and a half as they applied to colleges and made final college decisions during unprecedented times. We wish them all the best and are available in the future should they need any assistance.

Final Transcript
A final transcript will be sent in mid-June by the College Counseling Office to the ONE college where your son is enrolling so it is important that seniors notify Mrs. Palopoli of their final choice by updating their Scoir account. We encourage seniors to remain focused on their academics as we end the school year. We have many examples of colleges that have reconsidered or rescinded admissions decisions due to a downturn in senior year grades.

Deposit Deadline
Be prepared to enroll at ONE college by that college’s registration deadline. May 1, 2021 is the date viewed by the collegiate community as the universal reply date for regular admission. You will be required to send an admission and/or housing deposit to confirm your enrollment intentions. Under no circumstances should you enroll and deposit at more than one college!

College Kickstart
Please join us on Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at 7:00 pm for a virtual tutorial on College Kickstart and insights from the College Counselors on how best to put this tool into practice.

College Kickstart is a tool that helps students: create a balanced college list, enhance their admission likelihood by sharing current data and trends, and search for schools based on interests, field of study, financial need, and more.

Career information

Students have created biographical, academic and activities profiles and are writing on topics of essays commonly required for college applications. The thoughtful completion of these assignments will help the student be prepared for the college application process. In order to earn a passing grade in Group Advisory, the Activities and Achievements section, Junior Survey Part 1 and 2 must be submitted in Scoir, as well as the Self-Survey for the College-Bound, and all outstanding items included in the PowerPoints in Open LMS by Friday, May 14, 2021. Failure to complete assignments will result in summer remediation that includes a remediation fee.

Applying to Colleges
The Application Process at La Salle can be found at which contains a wealth of information about the college search and application process. Please note that the EARLIEST date that your son should submit an application to college is Friday, September 10, 2021. If a college uses The Common Application (accepted by over 900 colleges and universities) then students must apply using The Common Application. We strongly encourage students to meet with their college counselor when school starts in the fall prior to submitting their applications.

The Senior College Counseling Group Advisory Class will start Monday, August 23, 2021 and the College Counselors will take the students, step-by-step, through the college application process in general and specifically the application process here at La Salle College High School. We will be filling out The Common Application during Cycle 2 and Cycle 3 in the month of September. The College Counselors will host a Senior Parent College Q & A Night at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, September 8, 2021 (location TBD).

Any student who has not yet visited a college campus is encouraged to do so over the summer and early fall (pending campus restrictions). Most colleges have also dramatically overhauled their virtual tours and are offering live information sessions and one on one meetings via Zoom, etc.

Increasing numbers of students are applying Early Decision or Early Action in the fall (typically over 80% of the senior class) and that has an impact on the timing of college visits and SAT/ACT examinations.  These official early application deadlines can range from October 15, 2021 to November 15, 2021. You can see the deadlines for each college on their admission website or for a handy excel spreadsheet of deadlines please visit the Common App Requirements Grid.

Standardized Tests
When registering for the SAT or ACT, your son is reminded to use his legal name, the name that is on his transcript, to avoid confusion in the college application process. Also, we recommend that students use suitable email addresses (preferably their La Salle school email) when corresponding with colleges keeping in mind the impressions they are creating. Our school code – 393370 – should be entered on the registration so the college counselors receive the test scores. There are also over 1,100 test optional colleges.

Thank you to the parents of juniors who took the time to complete the Parent Perspective forms sent to you in January. If you have not yet done so already, please complete the Parent Perspective and College Criteria Form as soon as possible. This information will help us counsel your sons by keeping your input in mind.

One year from now your sons will have deposited at a college or university. Their success depends on how well they have developed their talents during these past years and how much they invest themselves in the college search and application process. We encourage them to make good use of their time this summer and return in the fall prepared to make applications to colleges on a timely basis.
