Mr. Nicholas J. Coggins was recognized for his twenty-five years of service to the school during the annual Honors Convocation held on Thursday afternoon, October 15, 2020. Mr. Coggins came to La Salle in 1992 to teach Spanish and, for the past fifteen years, has also served as the school’s Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment.
Mr. Coggins has immersed himself in Lasallian education and formation. He has earned two master’s degrees from La Salle University – one in Education and one in Bilingual/Bicultural Studies. He has participated in the Lasallian Leadership Institute, the Lasallian Social Justice Institute, and multiple national Lasallian Huether workshops. He served as the school’s first Lasallian Animator, which is a school point person who promotes dialog and an increased awareness of the Lasallian mission at La Salle. He has also led a service trip to a Lasallian school in Puerto Rico for the past five years. In 1998, he was named Lasallian Educator of the Year. He has been involved in a variety of initiatives, programs, and roles at La Salle College High School. He leads the Environmental Club and a Social Justice Committee, chaperones ski trips, has co-founded the senior Kairos retreat program, moderated the Spanish Club and Student Council, directed intramurals, and even spent a stint as an assistant basketball coach.
Mr. Coggins was introduced through remarks written by Mr. William Leahy and delivered by Mr. Thomas Barna – two of his colleagues and closest friends:
“For those students fortunate enough to have Mr. Coggins in class, you know exactly what I am referencing, for those who have not, I can assure you that he is one of the finest educators any of us have had the joy to be around. A model for many of his colleagues, and the trouble shooter we run to when our lessons seem lost, or when, despite our best efforts, we cannot reach the talent within a student for whom we are concerned. In all these cases Nick seems to have words of wisdom, or maybe it is just his centered reserve, his leveled response, which eases a fellow colleague’s anxiety, and once again advances De La Salle’s mission from the shadows.”
“Simply stated, Nick is a Lasallian – in action and in spirit; unique because of his years of dedication – 25 years, plus three in service of the Christian Brothers (2000-2003), to be exact. He has been dedicated to this school community serving with a “simple genius” that makes dramatic moments seem calm, complicated events seem simple, and secular experiences grace filled.”
“Some of the finest men and women go about their calling so humbly, and in such a pious manner, that we almost miss their powerful influence. Their talent is in the everyday behind the scene shadows, and so it is with our honored faculty member this afternoon. We honor Mr. Coggins today for his twenty-five years of loyal and generous service to our beloved school and the Institute of the Christian Brothers.”
Mr. Coggins and his wife, Stacey, are the proud parents of three boys – Ryan ‘21, Brendan ‘22, and Liam – who shared the day with their father.
