Two members of the WEXPtv Media Program – Harrison Karsch ’23 & Braden Hynes ’22 recently completed the KYW Newstudies Program. This program, typically held at the KYW Studios in downtown Philadelphia, was held virtually for the 1st time in 52 years.
Since 1968, KYW Newsradio has given high school sophomores, juniors and seniors the opportunity to learn about the inner workings of a major market radio station with the Newstudies student reporter program.
During the program, students learn news writing, reporting, ethics and interviewing skills from station managers, editors, reporters, anchors and guest speakers. Then they research, write and record news stories about their school and community.
Braden and Harrison had the opportunity to produce a radio news story about La Salle College High School which aired on KYW 1060 AM.
Hynes and Karash join over 10 WEXPtv alumni who have completed the KYW Program since 2014.
Karsch shared that "It was really interesting to be mentored by people who work in the industry! It gives you a different perspective that a teacher or professor just can't teach.”
While Hynes added “The KYW Newstudies Program is a great opportunity to see what is behind the scenes of audio production. It was beneficial to learn from so many professionals that the program offers.”
Director of Multimedia Technology Mr. Robert Johnson was grateful for the opportunity, “Thanks to KYW for the continued partnership for our media students and the flexibility to offer the program virtually in a time of distance. La Salle Alumni who have participated in this program have gone on to great college Communication programs and now careers in media.”
