Busy Summer for the Rugby Team
The Explorers were part of a lot of great rugby this summer. Here is what the team has been up to.
The Explorers participated in five rugby 7's tournaments this summer, including the High School Rugby Championship at Franklin Field.
They then paraded around the field with the other High Schools during the College Rugby Challenge at PPL Park.
The team took runner-up in the Cheesesteak 7's tournament by defeating the Wilmington Colts in a dramatic semi-final before falling to Exeter in the final.
Summer 7's wrapped up the following weekend with Surfside Sevens, a two-day tournament down the shore. Everyone played well, particularly several recent graduates who were able to play a few more games in their La Salle jersey. The team went 3-2 over the course of the weekend, placed 7 of 16, and defeated St. Joe's Prep in a close one to close out the weekend.
Also at Surfside, three La Salle players were selected to play with Atlantis, a premier invitational side and eventual winners of the tournament. Raekwon Caswell '14 continued his run with Atlantis playing solid defense to help lead Atlantis to victory. Amir Furman '14 capped off his terrific summer with a selection to Atlantis where he contributed several tries over the course of the weekend. Liam Boyle '15 was honored as the 1000th player to play for Atlantis. His father, Biddy Boyle was #175 and a huge part of La Salle's success this summer as he lent his 7's expertise to the team.
Senior Nick Lintner travelled to Australia with 10 other students from La Salle for the Lasallian Youth Conference. Their trip happened to coincide with a State of Origin match, Australia's famed Rugby League rivalry. The group also attended a local Rugby Union game.
Several others attended camps, clinics, and other rugby events throughout the summer, including our own Coach Tulio '92 who recently participated in the US Club 7's National Championship in Seattle. As a member of the Schulykill River Exiles, coach received many accolades and recognition for 7's this Summer.
