Mr. Sigmund and Mr. O'Toole will present insights on a decade and half of work on technology, instruction, innovation and service, La Salle Community Tech Serve: A School, Community, and Industry Collaboration to Promote Innovative Practice and Social Justice.
Community Tech Serve is a continuing collaboration among La Salle's IT Department and Philadelphia schools and service agencies and seeks to educate students at La Salle and partner schools as a way to bridge the "digital divide" among communities. Mr. Sigmund and Mr. O'Toole have been original participants in Community Tech Serve, which received the National Association of Independent Schools Leading Edge Award in 2005.
Mr. Sigmund and Mr. O'Toole will also travel as part of the official delegation of the District of Eastern North America (DENA) to the International Congress. DENA is one of over 35 districts of the De La Salle Brothers of the Christian Schools, the largest religious order of Brothers in the Roman Catholic Church dedicated solely to the mission of Christian education, serving more than 1 million students in 1000 schools in 80 countries around the world. Mr. Sigmund has served on the faculty of La Salle for 27 years and Mr. O'Toole for 38.
The World Congress of Lasallian Education will present international perspectives on Lasallian Education for the Twenty-First Century. The Congress has been designed as a key event during a year in which Lasallian schools around the globe will commemorate the 300th anniversary of the entry of St. John Baptist de La Salle into eternal life. According to Brother Gustavo Ramirez, FSC, General Councilor and General Coordinator for the tercentenary celebrations, "This anniversary provides an opportunity...to celebrate our Lasallian heritage, and to renew our commitment to protect the viability and vitality of the Lasallian educational mission through our work."
