Patrick Kelly '18 Places 4th at the Barkley Forum at Emory University
This was the first time a La Salle student has made the final round at the Barkley Forum since January 2007.
The La Salle College High School Speech and Debate Team competed at the Barkley Forum for High Schools hosted by Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Team President Patrick Kelly '18 placed 4th in Original Oratory, marking the first time a La Salle College High School student has made the final round at the Barkley Forum since January 2007, when Antoine Albert '08 made the final round in Prose and Poetry.
There were 85 competitors from across the country participating in Original Oratory, an event that consists of performing a 10-minute student written persuasive speech. Patrick's speech, "Close Enough," argues we need to revalue the way society looks at near wins. Patrick's successes at the Barkley Forum for High Schools earned him additional invitations to the Tournament of Champions hosted by the University of Kentucky and the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions hosted in Denver, Colorado.
Also participating at the Barkley Forum were Jack Reckner '18, Martin Csongradi '18, Jack Martin '18, JV Fluehr '19, and Ian Mattson '19. Unlike most tournaments, the Barkley Forum gives priority access to member schools based off previous success. La Salle has been a member school since 1981.
In Humorous Interpretation, Jack Reckner '18 placed 28th, JV Fluehr '19 placed 29th, and Patrick Kelly '18 placed 31st.
