On Saturday, February 24th, the Speech & Debate Team hosted the Pennsylvania High School Speech League District 11 and 12 qualifiers. The top two entries in each event qualified to the State Finals. 21 La Salle students earned their way to the State Tournament, held on March 16-17 at Bloomsburg University, including seven entries winning an individual District Championship. Those impressive numbers gave La Salle 122 points toward the team award, with the next closest in District 11 having 74 points, giving the Speech and Debate Team its 14th consecutive District 11 Team Championship.

This win built off of a strong conclusion to the Team's invitational season. At the Pennsbury Falcon Invitational in early February, the team placed 3rd overall in Speech Events out of 67 schools entered – including individual 1st places by Patrick Kelly '18 in Informative Speaking and Luke Kawczynski '21 in Declamation. The following weekend, eight Explorers competed at the 43rd University of Pennsylvania tournament with Desmond Young '18, Martin Csongradi '18, and Patrick Kelly '18 being recognized for individual awards in Extemporaneous Speaking and Original Oratory. Last weekend, the Team competed at its final Invitational of the year, The 44th Annual Harvard University National Tournament. Patrick Kelly won his 3rd award in as many weekends, placing 2nd in Informative Speaking out of 157 competitors, marking the first time a La Salle student reached the final round of the Harvard Tournament in school history.

The Speech and Debate Team turns its attention to the Philadelphia Catholic Forensics League Finals on March 3rd, where the top six entries in each event earn a spot at the National Catholic Forensics League Tournament in Washington, D.C., and the National Speech and Debate Association Valley Forge District Qualifiers on March 10th-11th. The top two entries will earn a spot at the 2018 National Tournament in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
