The Summer of Service Begins Now
Over 300 sophomores and juniors, along with their parents, gathered for the annual Commissioning Prayer Service and parent meetings for the upcoming 2018 Summer Service Immersion program.
Tuesday Night, May 8th over 300 sophomores and juniors, along with their parents, gathered for the annual Commissioning Prayer Service and parent meetings for the upcoming 2018 Summer Service Immersion program. This evening provided students and parents with the opportunity to come together as a community and prayerfully reflect on the commitment being made to touch the hearts of others through service.
The evening was presided over by Deacon Tim Lynch from St. Jude's parish, where he congratulated them on following in the path of our Catholic Christian calling, and challenged them to be open to the experience as well, allowing the Holy Spirit to work through them, and recognize that God has touched their hearts as well.
This summer, sophomores will spend one week in Philadelphia as part of the Urban Immersion program, where they will work with a broad cross section of Catholic Social Service Agencies and Catholic grade schools, serving some of the most challenged neighborhoods in our community.
Juniors will travel to Appalachia to work with Habitat for Humanity; Serve in the inner city neighborhoods of Chicago, the Bronx, and Memphis; Serve the Native American populations on the Navajo reservation in Arizona and New Mexico as well as the Blackfeet reservation in Montana; Work alongside migrant farmers and the homeless in the Coachella Valley of California; Perform Hurricane relief and restoration in Puerto Rico; Minister to the people on the island of St. Lucia; and experience how social services are delivered in the EU working with the impoverished in Limerick, Ireland.
All students involved volunteer for the program, as there are no service hour requirements placed on students at La Salle. In addition, all funding for the program is sourced through a variety of fund raising initiatives and donations by parents.
