Urban Immersion - Summer Service for Sophomores

Urban Immersion - Summer Service for Sophomores

The deadline for applications is December 2, 2016.

In the summer of 2010, a group of 35 rising juniors answered La Salle's call to "Leave to Serve" and participated in our first ever Philadelphia Urban Immersion. Last summer, over 160 sophomores participated in one of five immersions in our fifth year of the program. This is a testimony to the spirit of service that is contagious at La Salle. We are proud to once again offer this program to the Class of 2019.

The Urban Immersion is a unique opportunity for students to live in community and work at various social service organizations in the city. Students will encounter the poor in soup kitchens, schools, churches, or on the streets. Students will have the opportunity to participate in homeless outreach, work at Project H.O.M.E. (West Philly), Saint Francis de Salles School (West Philadelphia), Blessed Sarnelli House (Kensignton), Saint Lucy School for the Hearing and Visually Impaired, Holy Innocents Parish (Juniata), as well as other agencies. The project will be based on the principles of the Ministry and Service Team which are faith, service, and community. Mr. Dominick and Mr. Clark will also speak to all sophomore religion classes the week of November 14, 2016 to discuss the trip in detail.

Students and chaperones will be housed at either The Catholic Newman Center in University City or at Saint Patrick's Church in Center City Philadelphia. In addition, spiritual, educational, and recreational activities will be provided.

There are five trips scheduled for this summer. Trips are scheduled the following weeks: May 28- June 2, June 4- 9, June 11-16, July 9-14, and July 16-21, 2017. All trips begin on Sunday at 1:00 pm and end on Friday by 10:00 am.

The application for the trip is posted at www.lschs.org/summerservice , and will also be available at the class presentations as well as in the Campus Ministry Center. The application forms are due in Campus Ministry no later than Friday, December 2, 2016. There is a $375.00 fee that is due with your application. The fee covers room and board, SEPTA tokens, breakfast, lunch and dinner, supplies, stipends for speakers, etc... The only expense for the week will be dinner on our excursion night. There will be NO ADDITIONAL FUNDRASING. If the fee is an issue, please contact Mr. Clark or Mr. Dominick. Please make the check out to La Salle College High School and put summer service in the memo line.

WHEN SIGNING UP FOR DATES, PLEASE BE OPEN TO AS MANY WEEKS AS POSSIBLE. In order to accommodate everyone who wants to participate, we need great flexibility.

In May, there will be a mandatory meeting for selected students and their parent/guardian.

If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Clark (clarkl@lschs.org).
