Class of 2028 Welcome

Welcome to the course selection process! Completing this process in PowerSchool allows us to get to know you a little better and prepare for your arrival on our campus in August.

Please select your courses by Wednesday, April 10.

To be clear, there is not much for you to choose in this process. That is because most of the course placements are based on either your entrance test scores from last fall or placement test scores from next month. (More about placement tests in the folder below.) You will, however, select your choice of World Languages and if you would like to take an Art or Music course.

As you go through this course selection process, it might also be helpful to have the two-sided overview handout titled "Freshman Year Course Selection for 2024-25”. It was in your folders at the Academic Orientation. If you want additional details, open up the ten-page PDF with the course descriptions and more context behind the placement decisions. It can be found below.

To complete the course selection process, students or parents will open their PowerSchool accounts. To access PowerSchool, follow the instructions provided in the folder you received at Academic Orientation. Those instructions are below as well. Once on the navigation panel, choose “Class Registration,” follow the prompts, and click “Submit”.

Note: You will see references to "academic scholarships". They include Presidential, McLean, Principal, and D'Alfonso.

Dates

• Wednesday, April 24

Times

Between 3:15-5:30. A student must take the required Math placement test on a different day than the optional World Language or Science test. Please do not arrive later than 4:00 for the Math test or 4:30 for a Science or Language test.

NOTE: You DO NOT need to register in advance for a placement test on a specific date.

We will have enough tests on hand each day. Just show up at the main entrance and let us know which test(s) you plan to take. Any questions about placement tests should be directed to Mrs. Catrina Wheatley at wheatleyc@lschs.org or 215-402-4896.

 

Math Placement

ALL students take a placement test in Math. The test is 90 minutes and covers pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, and some Algebra 2. Students may use a graphing calculator, but it is not necessary. All work must be shown.

Your score on the placement test, along with your entrance test scores on the Math sections, will enable us to identify the best course for you. If you hope to take a course beyond Algebra 2 Honors in freshman year, then contact the Chair of the Math Department, Mr. Nolan (nolang@lschs.org) to discuss the most appropriate pathway.

 

World Languages

ONLY students who want to begin with Level 2 or Level 2 Honors in a World Language should take the placement test. Only those students who currently have a full year of a world language class in 8th grade in a course that meets every day (in other words the equivalent of a high-school level course) are invited to take a placement test in Spanish, Latin, or Chinese. The world language exams are 60 minutes in length and include multiple choice questions, fill-in-the-blank questions, and answering questions with full sentences.

 

Science

ONLY students who did not earn an academic scholarship (Presidential, McLean, Principal, or D’Alfonso) and are interested in beginning with an Honors-level Biology course should take this placement test. The Science Placement Test is 60 minutes. It has 90 multiple-choice questions. There is no need for a calculator.

 

Music

Evaluations for music will take place over two days (April 24, May 6). If you haven’t done so already, please fill out a very brief form to indicate what musical instrument(s) you will play and your preferred date(s). ONLY students who want to register for a Music class and have lessons in their instrument next year should fill out this form:

Times

You will be scheduled for a 15-minute evaluation on the day(s) you choose. Mr. Mele, the Chair of the Fine Arts Department, will contact you by email about your time slot.

All incoming freshmen in the class of 2028 must have a sports physical on file through Appryse by September 9, 2024, regardless of whether they are playing a sport or not. This physical will satisfy the Pennsylvania state education requirement, the PIAA requirement, and La Salle’s policy. Appryse will not open for pre-enrollments for the class of 2028 until May 15, 2024 at the following link: https://www.lschs.org/athletics/health-safety. Please do not attempt to create and submit your account prior to that date.

Physicals for the 2024-2025 school year must be authorized on, or after May 1, 2024.

Any student-athlete who plans to participate in summer workouts for any sport must:

• Have an active Appryse account
• Have an accepted physical on that account
• Be on the appropriate tryout roster.

No student will be permitted on a field/court until these requirements are met.

• Have an accepted physical on that account

** All students must submit an Appryse physical form. La Salle does not accept PIAA forms, learners permit exam forms, or physicals dated prior to May 1, 2024. All physical forms must be downloaded from the student’s Appryse account and uploaded to that account after they are completed by authorized medical personnel. If your child’s pediatrician cannot complete the form, most pharmacies and clinics can perform the physical for an out-of-pocket cost. **

La Salle has partnered with a nurse practitioner to provide physicals on campus on the following dates:

• June 4
• June 5
• June 10
• June 14
• July 10
• August 7

Appointments require pre-registration and will run every five minutes throughout the day between the hours of 9 am-12 pm, 1-4 pm, and 5-8 pm (different days have different hours).

The cost of this will be $40 (cash/check/venmo). We are offering this option to help you get the physicals submitted early so that your son can participate in summer workouts and fall tryouts, or to satisfy the general La Salle requirement of submitting a physical by September 9, 2024. This also puts you on a good cycle for this process each summer for the next four years at La Salle!

La Salle offered two virtual information sessions for incoming freshman and parents to help ease the transition to high school for the Class of 2028.

As you may recall from the freshman academic orientation sessions in March, there is some summer work that you will need to complete before mid-August. That work is posted in your Schoology “course” called “Welcome to La Salle – Class of 2028”.

Students can access Schoology by using the LSCHS Email Address received via the folder you received at Freshman Orientation in March - click on Log in with Microsoft to access the class page.

Under “Materials”, you will find a folder at the top labeled “Summer 2024 Assignments”. Please read the information found there carefully.

 

We hope these summer assignments keep you academically sharp during the break without overburdening you. Spread out the work; you will enjoy it much more that way. Your efforts on these assignments will contribute significantly to your transition in those opening class days. The more you put into your assignments this summer, the better your transition will be

La Salle College High School is pleased to provide an environment in which students, faculty, and staff can connect their personally-owned computers and network-capable mobile devices to the network and gain access to their La Salle accounts and the Internet. In order to gain the most benefit from this, the Office of Information Technology makes recommendations for minimum computer configurations.

Chromebooks, iPads, and Android tablets are not suitable devices for school use and will not be permitted. While these devices may connect to La Salle’s network, the Office of Information Technology cannot guarantee that all features necessary for classroom use or digital standardized testing will work with these devices and cannot be supported.
