La Salle College High School is excited to offer its original STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Camp to students entering grades 5, 6, 7 and 8! This weeklong science camp is an experiential learning opportunity unlike any other. Each of the 5 full days of camp expose participants to an academically enriched interconnection between the STEM disciplines. An exciting team challenge approach makes learning stimulating, engaging and fun.
This year’s theme titled “Shark Week – Understanding and Protecting marine and Aquatic Ecosystems” will encourage students to “think like marine biologists” and work collaborating to develop solutions to many of the ecological problems that face Earth’s oceans and freshwater environments. Activities will include challenges in boat building, hydroelectric power, ocean desalination, ocean floor mapping and topography, and dissecting a real shark! As future scientifically minded leaders, it becomes more important than ever to learn to make choices that keep us strong and better able to serve tomorrow’s society.
Based heavily on the lab experience and data collection, the camp includes regular applications of the engineering-design process. Segments of automation and programming will be incorporated throughout the week – no prior robotics/coding experience is necessary. Experimentation via the iterative design process is also part of the camp curriculum. A team approach to problem solving will be emphasized.
Indoor and outdoor activities are planned. The use of La Salle’s environmental learning spaces, trails and fields may be utilized, and campers can expect a balance of recreation and academic experiences throughout their camp day.
Lunch will be available for purchase each day from the La Salle Cafeteria. Transportation is not provided for STEM Camp.
The final day of STEM Camp, Friday, August 1, will include a pool party and pizza to celebrate our week of learning and discovery!
