Basketball
Basketball is the school’s oldest athletic team dating back to 1919. The Explorers won back-to-back Philadelphia Catholic Championships in 1936 and 1937, which were the first Philadelphia Catholic League championships for the school. La Salle has captured six championships since then, which is the third most of any team in the league, and won almost 900 league games.
The program boasts seven 1,000-point scorers, including NBA Great and Basketball Hall of Famer Tom Gola ’51. Explorer Basketball consists of varsity, junior varsity, and freshman teams and the program currently has several players on NCAA Division 1 (5) and Division 3 (6) basketball teams. Through the years, the Explorers have made 63 playoff appearances and been led by only a dozen different coaches, including Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame inductees Charles “Obie” O’Brien and Marty Jackson.
The school’s gym and basketball court are named in honor of O’Brien (Charles “Obie” O’Brien Gymnasium) in recognition of his 541 career victories.
